Velký Hodonický rybník

Velký Hodonický rybník is a small protected natural monument in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, located in the cadastral area of Hodonice u Malont within the municipality of Malonty in the Český Krumlov district. The site protects a shallow fishpond set in the gently rolling Novohradské podhůří highlands at an elevation of roughly 630 meters, and its protected status was granted on 26 October 2023 by the Regional Authority of the South Bohemian Region. The core reason for protection is the pond's population of the white water lily (Nymphaea candida), a strongly threatened species that occurs here together with other characteristic wetland plants and a rich community of dragonflies and amphibians. The protected area overlaps entirely with a same-named European Site of Community Importance, underscoring the pond's recognized value within the Natura 2000 network. Although the pond covers only about 2.71 hectares, it represents a distinctive example of a mesotrophic, cool-region aquatic habitat shaped by centuries of traditional Bohemian fishpond management. The site illustrates how small, historically managed water bodies can preserve rare aquatic vegetation and serve as important refuges for amphibians and odonates in an otherwise predominantly forested and agricultural landscape.
