Werra-Aue zwischen Breitungen und Creuzburg is a designated European bird protection area, or Special Protection Area (SPA), situated in the floodplain of the Werra river in western Thuringia, Germany. Stretching roughly 2,578 hectares along about 33.6 kilometers of the river, the area links the localities of Breitungen in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district and Creuzburg in the Wartburgkreis. It forms part of the continent-wide Natura 2000 network and exists primarily to safeguard breeding, feeding, and resting habitats for a rich community of waterbirds, waders, and meadow-breeding species. The protected landscape is shaped by the broad Werratal, where natural subsidence over deep-lying salt deposits has produced sinkhole lakes, old river arms, reedbeds, water meadows, and remnants of floodplain forest. Large open grasslands, some of which are still extensively grazed or mown late in the season, provide nesting conditions for vulnerable ground-breeding birds. Beyond its bird-focused designation, the area overlaps with multiple Habitat Directive sites (Fauna-Flora-Habitat, or FFH, areas), nature reserves, and floodplain protections, making it a key node in Thuringia's ecological infrastructure.
