Westlich Berus

Westlich Berus is a small protected nature reserve in the Saarland of southwestern Germany, lying on the territory of the municipality of Überherrn in the Landkreis Saarlouis. It stretches west of the village of Berus, directly along the national border with France, occupying roughly 143 hectares of the rolling hills that mark the edge of the Saar–Moselle region. The area was designated as a nature reserve on 26 May 2016 under the identifier NSG-N-6706-302 and is classified internationally as an IUCN Category IV Habitat/Species Management Area. Its purpose is to safeguard a mosaic of calcareous grassland, spring-fed tufa seepages, slope and ravine forests, and nutrient-poor woodland pools, several of which are European priority habitat types. The reserve is notable for combining submediterranean semi-dry grassland rich in orchids with old beech woodland on limestone, a combination that supports amphibians such as the great crested newt and yellow-bellied toad as well as rare woodland bats. Its position right on the German–French border gives it additional value as a stepping-stone in the wider transboundary network of calcareous habitats in the Saar–Lorraine landscape.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
