The nature reserve occupies land in both the town of Attendorn and the municipality of Finnentrop, with the majority of the area belonging to Finnentrop, and is divided into two sections by the L 539 regional road.

Despite its small size, the reserve compresses a striking variety of habitat types. The Ahauser Klippen cliffs rise as some of the highest natural rock biotopes in the Olpe district, their fissures supporting specialized moss and plant communities. Below and around the cliffs, the forest cover includes winter-lime and hornbeam scree woodland, orchid-rich calcareous beech forest, woodruff beech forest, and ravine and slope mixed forests that are extremely rare in this natural region.
