Border Ranges National Park occupies a significant position in Australia's protected area network as a core component of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Site. The park's landscape is defined by the McPherson Range and Tweed Range, which form part of the Great Dividing Range along the border between New South Wales and Queensland. The terrain was shaped by millions of years of erosion of the massive Tweed Volcano, leaving behind dramatic plateau surfaces and volcanic plug remnants that create distinctive peaks throughout the park. The park's ecological significance stems from its location at a biogeographic crossroads, where subtropical, cool temperate and warm temperate rainforest types occur in close proximity across relatively short distances. A 64 kilometre gravel road circuit provides vehicle access through the park, allowing visitors to experience the transition between different rainforest types as elevation changes. The park also serves as a corridor for the Lions Road and the Sydney-Brisbane rail corridor, connecting communities on either side of the range.
