Cartier Island Marine Park

Cartier Island Marine Park is a small, fully protected marine reserve in Australian Commonwealth waters, situated in the Timor Sea roughly 610 kilometres north of Broome, Western Australia. It centres on Cartier Island and the surrounding reef system on the outer edge of the North West Shelf, an area recognised for its emergent oceanic reefs, pelagic waters, and rich tropical marine life. The park is classified as an IUCN Category Ia sanctuary zone, meaning it is managed primarily for scientific research and ecosystem preservation, with no extractive activities permitted. It forms one of thirteen parks in the North-west Marine Parks Network administered by Parks Australia. Beyond its ecological values, Cartier Island Marine Park is internationally notable for the abundance and diversity of sea snakes found on its reefs, for feeding populations of marine turtles, and for hosting some of the most important seabird breeding colonies on the North West Shelf. Access is tightly restricted, partly because the area has historical defence use and contains unexploded ordnance.
