Dana Biosphere Reserve

Dana Biosphere Reserve represents Jordan's premier conservation achievement, established in 1989 to protect an area of exceptional ecological, geological, and cultural significance in the country's south-central highlands. The reserve's defining characteristic is its position at the crossroads of four biogeographical zones, creating a remarkable gradient from Mediterranean woodlands at higher elevations through Irano-Turanian steppe to Saharo-Arabian desert and Sudanian-influenced valleys. This ecological diversity is reflected in the reserve's flora, which includes 703 plant species, making Dana the most botanically diverse area in Jordan. The landscape is shaped by complex geology featuring exposed Paleozoic and Cretaceous sandstone formations, Cretaceous and Tertiary carbonate rocks, and Precambrian granitoids. The Dana Horst, a geological block formed by east-west trending faults, creates the distinctive topography of Wadi Dana with its wind-sculpted sandstone cliffs. Beyond its natural values, the reserve protects archaeological evidence of continuous human presence spanning over six millennia, from Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers through Nabataean and Roman settlements to the present-day Ata'ta tribe who maintain their traditional relationship with this landscape.
