Dasos Machaira

Dasos Machaira is a protected natural area located in central Cyprus, recognized both as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the Natura 2000 network. The designation was granted in December 2002 as an avifaunal protection site, reflecting the importance of the area for breeding and migratory birds. The site lies within the Mediterranean ecoregion and is characterized by a mosaic of forest types, shrublands, rocky slopes, phrygana, and riverine vegetation. Thirteen natural habitat types are formally recognized within its boundaries, giving it an unusually broad habitat profile for an island protected area. Dasos Machaira is particularly notable for its ecological richness: 72 protected bird species, several bat species, endemic reptiles, and rare endemic plants such as Cypriot crocuses all contribute to its conservation value. The combination of forest cover, Mediterranean shrub communities, and rocky terrain makes it a representative example of Cyprus's inland natural heritage.
