A small inland sand dune in Hesse preserving rare steppe-like dry grassland habitat.

Düne am Ulvenberg von Darmstadt-Eberstadt

The Düne am Ulvenberg von Darmstadt-Eberstadt is a small inland sand dune and protected nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) located on the western edge of the Darmstadt-Eberstadt district in the German state of Hesse. Covering roughly 8.89 hectares, the site preserves a remnant of the Pleistocene inland dune landscape that once stretched from Rastatt in Baden-Württemberg through to Mainz. Its ecological value lies in the mosaic of dry, sun-exposed sandy habitats that support relict steppe-like vegetation unusual for central Germany. The reserve is especially notable for the coexistence of pine mixed woodland with several types of open, xerothermic dry grassland: broomgrass steppe turf, loose silver-grass dry grassland, and a warmer broomgrass dry grassland community. These vegetation zones harbor a significant number of protected, rare, or threatened plant species, making the dune an important refugium for sand-dwelling flora within the Upper Rhine region. Administratively, the site is recognized at multiple levels. Parts were already designated as a natural monument in 1938, the full area became a state nature reserve in 1991, and since 2001 it has also been part of the European Natura 2000 network as a Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) area.
