Ethniko Dasiko Parko Rizoelias

Ethniko Dasiko Parko Rizoelias is a protected natural area in the Republic of Cyprus, falling within the Natura 2000 network of European conservation sites. It is classified simultaneously as a Site of Community Importance, a Special Area of Conservation, and a Special Protection Area for birds, reflecting its triple designation under EU nature law. The site covers just over 120 hectares of terrestrial habitat in a Mediterranean ecoregion, representing a small but ecologically focused forest reserve rather than a vast wilderness landscape. At the core of the area's identity is a mosaic of dry Mediterranean habitats, including gypsum-rich gypsophilous vegetation, arborescent matorral with Ziziphus, phrygana dominated by Sarcopoterium spinosum, and pseudo-steppe grasslands of the Thero-Brachypodietea class. These habitats support a rich community of breeding and migratory birds, which is the primary reason the site has been given avifaunistic protection in addition to its habitat-based designation. The park sits within the broader European ecological network that links protected areas across member states, and as such it functions both as a standalone national conservation site and as a node in transboundary biodiversity protection. Despite its modest size, it offers a representative example of Cyprus's Mediterranean forest and shrubland ecology.
