The grazing flocks traditionally included a mixture of sheep and goats, and the resulting short, open sward became a defining feature of the valley.
During the second half of the twentieth century the valley was used as a training ground by the National People's Army of the GDR and later by the Bundeswehr of reunified Germany. Winter visits reveal the geological structure of the valley particularly clearly, when the absence of dense foliage exposes the limestone strata and the dry stony bed of the Steingraben along the valley floor.
