Kiišḥniqʷus Conservancy

Kiišḥniqʷus Conservancy is a protected conservancy in British Columbia, Canada, situated on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island within the Regional District of Alberni-Clayoquot. Established on June 18, 2024, it covers more than eleven thousand hectares of land centered on the Sydney River valley and the surrounding coastal terrain between Sydney Inlet and Shelter Inlet. The conservancy forms part of a larger network of protected areas in one of the most remote and ecologically significant sections of Vancouver Island. It is bordered by Sydney Inlet Provincial Park to the west, Strathcona Provincial Park to the east, and Sulphur Passage Provincial Park to the southeast, effectively linking smaller protected blocks into a broader contiguous landscape. The nearby community of Tofino serves as the closest town and a natural gateway to this stretch of coast. Its name comes from the Nuu-chah-nulth language and refers to a traditional Ahousaht fishing camp at the mouth of the Sydney River, as well as to the river mouth itself. The designation reflects both the cultural importance of the area to the Ahousaht First Nation and its identity as a coastal landscape shaped by long-standing human relationships with the sea and the rivers that flow into it.
