Kinzigaue von Langenselbold

Kinzigaue von Langenselbold is a designated nature reserve in the state of Hesse in central Germany, situated in the Main-Kinzig district along the lower course of the Kinzig river. Covering roughly 129 hectares south of the town of Langenselbold, the protected area encompasses one of the most ecologically intact stretches of the Kinzig floodplain, including its alluvial forests, oxbow wetlands, and a notable waterbody known as the Ruhlsee. The reserve was established in 1980 to preserve a near-natural state of the Kinzig floodplain and its associated gallery forests, and it has been part of the European Natura 2000 network as an FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) area since 2008. Its protection aims explicitly at safeguarding the Ruhlsee as a resting and staging site for waterbirds, while also conserving botanically and ornithologically rich floodplain woodland that supports rare plant communities and a diverse bird fauna. Bordered by the A 66 motorway to the south and the A 45 to the west, the site forms a compact but ecologically important refuge in an otherwise heavily managed landscape, providing a continuous corridor of natural floodplain habitat within the Kinzig valley north of the Spessart foothills.
