Koilada Potamou Maroullenas

Koilada Potamou Maroullenas is a small protected natural area in Cyprus, recognized as a Natura 2000 site with overlapping designations as a Site of Community Importance, a Special Area of Conservation, and a Special Protection Area for birds. The site is entirely terrestrial and lies within the Mediterranean ecoregion, covering a compact landscape shaped by a river valley (koilada) and the surrounding slopes. The area preserves a mosaic of natural Mediterranean habitats, including intermittent river channels with riparian willow and poplar galleries, thermos-Mediterranean shrublands, phrygana, pseudo-steppe grasslands, rocky siliceous slopes with casmophyte vegetation, and remnants of Mediterranean pine forest and Olea-Ceratonia woodlands. These habitats support a diverse bird community, the Egyptian fruit bat, endemic reptile subspecies, and other protected fauna. Although modest in size, the site plays an important role within the Cypriot Natura 2000 network, contributing to the conservation of Mediterranean dryland and riparian habitats and to the protection of bird species that depend on these landscapes for breeding and migration.
