Notable elements include a calcareous spring mire east of the Griesheuel along the road from Ripsdorf to Alendorf, a further calcareous mire between Alendorf and Feusdorf north of the K 43, and small fens along the valley floors. The contrast between open, sun-warmed limestone hills, deeply incised wooded valleys, scattered wet flushes, and old quarries and Pingen (former iron-ore workings) gives the landscape its distinctive, finely textured character.
