Mariusa National Park

Mariusa National Park is a Brazilian-sized protected area in the easternmost part of Venezuela, sitting squarely at the center of the Orinoco Delta where the country's largest river flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The park takes its name from Mariusa Island on the coast, though the largest single landmass of seasonally flooded terrain is Isla Redonda, framed by the Macareo and Mariusa distributary channels. The protected landscape is dominated by tropical rainforest, mangrove forests, morichales (Mauritia palm swamps), and open savannas, all shaped by tides that penetrate far into the delta's caños. Part of the broader UNESCO Orinoco Delta Biosphere Reserve, Mariusa represents one of the most ecologically distinct regions of Venezuela, where freshwater and marine influences blend across thousands of kilometers of distributary channels. The territory is also the heartland of the Warao people, whose cultural landscape is inseparable from the physical one. Since its establishment in 1991, the park has remained a key reference point for Orinoco wetland conservation and for understanding how a major river delta functions as both a natural system and a long-inhabited human landscape.
