Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz, Frankenjura

Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz – Frankenjura is one of the largest and most established nature parks in northern Bavaria, Germany, covering more than 2,300 square kilometers of the Nördliche Frankenalb, the northern section of the Franconian Jura. Established in 1968 and formally designated by ordinance in 1995, it stretches across parts of three Bavarian administrative regions: Oberfranken, Mittelfranken, and Oberpfalz. The park's identity is defined by the classic scenery of the Fränkische Schweiz, with deeply cut, romantic river valleys, broad karst high plateaux, isolated dolomite rock formations, numerous caves, and an unusually dense network of medieval castles and hilltop ruins. In the east, the large contiguous woodland of the Veldensteiner Forst, dominated by pine forests and home to red deer, adds a quieter forested dimension to the park's broader landscape character. Beyond its scenic value, the nature park plays a significant role in regional conservation and outdoor recreation, incorporating a substantial network of designated nature reserves (Naturschutzgebiete) and landscape protection areas. Its combination of geological diversity, cultural history, and accessible countryside makes it one of the defining protected landscapes of northern Bavaria.
