Neupotzer Altrhein

The Neupotzer Altrhein is a protected bird reserve and nature area in the northeastern part of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany, lying south of Speyer within the Germersheim district. The site preserves a former arm of the Rhine, created when the river was straightened in the nineteenth century, and has since evolved into a rich floodplain mosaic of oxbows, marshlands, reedbeds and wet forests. Designated under the European Birds Directive and forming part of the broader Natura 2000 network, the reserve complements the nearby Hördter Rheinaue bird protection area. It also overlaps with the Hördter Rheinaue Habitats Directive site and the broader Pfälzische Rheinauen landscape protection area, weaving together several layers of national and European conservation status. Beyond its ecological value, the Neupotzer Altrhein is appreciated as a regional recreation area, with walking and cycling paths, angling waters and canoe-friendly sections attracting visitors year-round. Educational initiatives by environmental groups help raise awareness of the threatened floodplain habitats and the species that depend on them.
