Oberes Rißtal

Oberes Rißtal is a large protected landscape area in the district of Biberach in Baden-Württemberg, southern Germany. It covers more than 4,100 hectares of valley landscape along the upper course of the Riß river, between the town of Bad Schussenried and the municipality of Ummendorf. The area lies within the natural regions of the Oberschwäbisches Hügelland, the Donau-Ablach-Platten, and the Riß-Aitrach-Platten. It preserves a richly structured glacial landscape shaped by ice-age landforms, natural meanders, steep cut banks, and extensive lowland fen habitats. Several nature reserves, including Riedschachen, Vogelfreistätte Lindenweiher, and Ummendorfer Ried, lie within its boundaries, giving the protected landscape a strong ecological identity. Although it is officially classified as a Protected Landscape, the area functions as an important ecological buffer in Upper Swabia, linking fens, riverine habitats, woodlands, and centuries-old cultural landscapes into a single continuous protected corridor.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
