Ostoja Gorczańska

Ostoja Gorczańska is a designated Special Area of Conservation within the European Union Natura 2000 network, located in the Małopolskie Voivodeship of southern Poland. It covers approximately 17,998 hectares and stretches across two connected mountain units: the Gorce range and the Mogielica range, which belongs to the Beskid Wyspowy. The area sits within the Nowotarski and Limanowski powiats and overlaps almost entirely with two major landscape protection frameworks: the Gorczański Park Narodowy and the Południowomałopolski Obszar Chronionego Krajobrazu. The site was proposed in 2008 as a candidate Special Area of Conservation and currently holds the status of a Site of Community Importance. Its purpose is to safeguard a continuous corridor of Carpathian habitats, including beech and spruce forests, peatlands, montane grasslands, and rocky outcrops, along with the species that depend on them. It is one of the larger and more ecologically cohesive Natura 2000 areas in the Polish Western Carpathians, functioning both as a biodiversity reservoir and as a structural bridge between protected landscapes in the region.
