Ostoje Nietoperzy okolic Bukowca

Ostoje Nietoperzy okolic Bukowca is a small protected site in the Małopolskie (Lesser Poland) region of southern Poland, established to safeguard bat populations that depend on church attics and a natural cave for roosting. Designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) under the European Union's Natura 2000 network, it focuses on two bat species listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive: the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) and the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis). The site is composed of four scattered forest enclaves on the Pogórze Rożnowskie foothills, each surrounding a church attic that hosts a maternity colony of bats. A natural cave known as Diabla Dziura w Bukowcu functions as the winter hibernation site. Beyond the bats, the area also shelters amphibians of conservation interest and includes four habitat types protected under Annex I of the Habitats Directive, ranging from mountain beech forests to oak-hornbeam woodland. Although the area covers only around 586 hectares and has no formal visitor infrastructure, it holds strong ecological value because of its role in sustaining viable bat populations within a heavily human-modified Polish countryside. Within the site lies the Diable Skały nature reserve, adding a layer of geological and forest protection to the broader sanctuary.
