Periochi Asgatas

Periochi Asgatas is a small protected natural area in the Republic of Cyprus, recognized as part of the European Natura 2000 network of important conservation sites. The site covers roughly 107 hectares entirely on land and is classified simultaneously as a Site of Community Importance, a Special Area of Conservation, and a Special Protection Area for birds. The protected area lies within the Mediterranean ecoregion and combines thermomediterranean scrubland, phrygana vegetation dominated by Sarcopoterium spinosum, and Mediterranean pine forest with endemic mesogean pines. Its conservation profile is shaped by the presence of two endemic plant subspecies, a large list of breeding and migratory bird species, and a small bat species of European concern. Although compact, the site plays an important role in Cyprus's network of protected natural areas, contributing to the safeguarding of Mediterranean habitats and species that are characteristic of the island's southern landscapes.
