Periochi Lefkaron

Periochi Lefkaron is a small but ecologically rich protected area in the island Republic of Cyprus, classified under the European Natura 2000 network as a Site of Community Importance, a Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area for birds. Covering roughly 132 hectares of entirely terrestrial habitat, the site lies within the broader Mediterranean ecoregion and preserves several of the habitat types that have become increasingly rare on the island through centuries of grazing, agriculture and development. The site stands out for its mosaic of dry Mediterranean shrublands, low phrygana formations and patches of distinctive eastern Mediterranean forest, including relict oriental plane and liquidambar woodlands as well as olive and carob groves. It has also been formally designated to protect endemic and range-restricted plants alongside a notably large assemblage of breeding and migrant bird species, several of which are of European conservation concern. For Cyprus, the designation of Periochi Lefkaron forms part of a wider Natura 2000 effort to maintain ecological connectivity, safeguard traditional rural landscapes, and protect the island's distinctive avifauna. Although compact in size, the site contributes meaningfully to the conservation of Mediterranean habitats that are otherwise under heavy pressure across the Levant and southeastern Europe.
