Potamos Panagias Stazousas

Potamos Panagias Stazousas is a protected natural area in Cyprus, formally designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the European Natura 2000 network. The site lies in the central part of the island and is centered on the river named Panagias Stazousas, with coordinates around 34.9 degrees north and 33.5 degrees east. Spanning roughly 1,744 hectares entirely on land, it forms part of Cyprus's wider effort to conserve Mediterranean birdlife and their associated habitats. The area belongs to the Mediterranean ecoregion and has no formally protected habitat types listed at the site level; its significance lies almost entirely in the bird species it shelters. Some 53 protected bird species are among the reasons the site was designated, covering raptors, ground-nesting birds, songbirds, and Mediterranean endemics. These species reflect a mix of farmland edges, scrubland, woodland patches, and the riparian corridor of the river itself. Beyond its ecological role, the site is a node in the broader network of Natura 2000 protected areas in Cyprus, contributing to the conservation of migratory and resident bird populations in the eastern Mediterranean. It illustrates how river valleys in Cyprus can act as both landscape features and biodiversity anchors.
