Raba z Mszanką

Raba z Mszanką is a Natura 2000 Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of southern Poland, recognized under the site code PLH120093. Covering roughly 249 hectares, it protects a stretch of mountain river and streamside habitat where the Raba and Mszanka watercourses shape the surrounding valley landscape. The designation reflects the ecological value of fast-flowing Carpathian rivers and the distinctive riparian vegetation that lines their gravel beds. The area is primarily known for safeguarding natural habitats that are increasingly rare across the region, especially the pioneer plant communities and willow shrub formations that colonize the gravel islands and bars of mountain streams. These habitats are tightly linked to natural river dynamics, including flooding, sediment movement, and channel shifting, which maintain the open character of the riverine landscape. The site also plays an important role in the conservation of the Mediterranean barbel (Barbus meridionalis), a freshwater fish species considered threatened across much of its range. By protecting both the fish and its supporting habitats, the area contributes to broader European efforts to preserve freshwater biodiversity in the Carpathian river systems.
