Rohrlache von Heringen is a protected floodplain area in the lower Werra valley, situated in the northeastern Hessian district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg. The Werra forms the western boundary of much of the reserve, while a smaller detached section of the protected area lies on the opposite bank of the river, framed visually by the Monte Kali spoil tip of the local potash mine. The reserve is embedded in the natural region of the Salzunger Werrabergland, part of the broader Osthessisches Bergland, and sits in the rain shadow of these uplands, where annual precipitation near 600 mm and a relatively mild mean annual temperature of around 8 degrees Celsius create favorable growing conditions.

The underlying geology of the region is shaped by the deep Permian Zechstein deposits, where layers of potash and rock salt accumulated more than 250 million years ago when an ancient sea evaporated under intense sunlight. Since the early twentieth century, potash salts have been extracted from two stacked mining horizons along the Werra, and the resulting saline wastewater, the so-called end brines, has been discharged into the river.
