Southwest National Park represents the essence of Tasmania's wild character, protecting a vast expanse of landscape that has remained remarkably untouched by human development. As the largest national park in Tasmania and a central component of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the park encompasses a remarkable diversity of terrain, from coastal heath and buttongrass plains to steep alpine peaks and ancient rainforest gullies. The park's name reflects not just its geographic position but its status as one of the last frontiers of accessible wilderness in Australia. Unlike many national parks that feature established visitor infrastructure, Southwest National Park remains fundamentally a wilderness experience where visitors must be self-sufficient and prepared for challenging conditions. The only settlement within or near the park is the small township of Strathgordon along the northern boundary, established to support hydroelectric operations. Beyond this single road access point, the interior and coastal regions remain reachable only by determined hiking, boating, or light aircraft, preserving an environment where nature operates largely without human interference.
