Syen-Venn history and protected-area timeline
Syen-Venn has been formally protected under German nature conservation law since 14 November 1936, making it one of the older protected bog sites in northwestern Germany. When first designated, the protected area was substantially larger, originally around 270 hectares, encompassing about 190 hectares of the main raised bog body and roughly 80 hectares of the surrounding bog margin.
In 1956 the scope of the protection ordinance was revised and the reserve was downsized to around 193.2 hectares. Over the following decades the site gained wider recognition, both through ecological research and through the rise of European habitat conservation policy. In 2004, an FFH (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) area of the same name was formally designated, which today coincides almost exactly with the national nature reserve, embedding Syen-Venn in the European Natura 2000 network.
The protection ordinance was most recently updated on 16 June 2016. As part of that update, the area of the reserve was readjusted slightly from the previous 193.2 hectares to approximately 196 hectares. Migration periods, particularly in spring and autumn, are when species such as cranes, harriers, snipes, and various ducks become more conspicuous. Weather conditions and personal comfort aside, daytime visits with stable footing are advisable, as the bog surface and its fringe pools remain wet throughout much of the year.
