Vallée de la Nizonne

Vallée de la Nizonne is a protected natural site in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France, recognized under the European Union Natura 2000 network. It follows the course of the Nizonne river, also known locally as the Lizonne, from its source to its confluence with the Dronne, crossing parts of both the Dordogne and Charente departments. The site's ecological importance comes from a diverse mosaic of alluvial habitats, including wet meadows, deciduous woodlands, peatlands, and one of the principal areas in the former Aquitaine region for alkaline low marshes dominated by Cladium. This varied landscape supports a community of threatened European species, from the highly endangered European mink to dragonflies, bats, and wetland plants. The area lies partly within the Parc naturel régional Périgord-Limousin, which adds another layer of regional landscape protection around its rural setting. It is valued primarily as a conservation zone rather than as a visitor attraction, and its significance lies in preserving the integrity of a functioning river valley ecosystem across many small communes.
