The hill is geologically distinctive. It is a Neovolcanic cone formed by the selective erosion of a nepheline-bearing basanite intrusion that once sat within softer Cretaceous marlstones. Over millions of years, the harder volcanic rock was exhumed, leaving behind columnar jointing, frost-shattered cliffs, boulder fields, and exposed basalt outcrops.
