The Wuyi Mountains form a distinctive mountain range located in the Nanping prefecture of northwestern Fujian province, near the border with Jiangxi province. The landscape is characterized by a series of winding river valleys flanked by columnar and dome-shaped cliffs, particularly in the eastern portion where red sandstone Danxia landforms create a striking visual contrast with the verdant vegetation. The Jiuqu Xi, or Nine-bend River, meanders for approximately 60 kilometers through deep gorges, carved over millennia into the ancient rock. The cave systems of the mountains are notable, with several open to the public including Fuxi Cave, where the famous Thread of Sky passage narrows to less than 40 centimeters. The region functions as a climatic barrier, protecting the area from cold northern air while retaining warm moist air from the sea, creating the humid conditions that support the rich ecosystems. Beyond its natural significance, the mountains contain archaeological evidence of human settlement dating to 4,000 years ago, with the ruins of the ancient Minyue kingdom capital at Chengcun from the Western Han dynasty.
