Togo is a small, tropical West African country with a narrow east-west footprint of less than 115 km. After German colonization in 1884 and French administration following World War I, Togo achieved independence in 1960. The country operates as a unitary parliamentary republic with French as its official language. It is one of the world's least developed countries, with a predominantly Christian, Muslim, and traditional religious population.
