National Parks and Protected Areas in Caribbean Netherlands

National parks and protected areas in Caribbean Netherlands offer essential geographic reference points for exploring island conservation landscapes. Regional park distribution data connects local island terrain with broader ecological mapping across the special municipalities.

The Caribbean Netherlands (Dutch: Caribisch Nederland) is a geographic region of the Netherlands located outside Europe in the Caribbean. It is made up of three special municipalities known as the BES islands: Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. The region has a population of around 31,980 and a total area of 322 square kilometres. Although legally part of the country of the Netherlands, the islands are classified as overseas territories of the European Union, meaning most EU law does not automatically apply there.

The Caribbean Netherlands represents the Caribbean islands that are directly part of the country of the Netherlands rather than separate constituent countries within the Kingdom. Its three islands have distinct geographic settings: Bonaire lies near the Venezuelan coast in the Leeward Antilles, while Sint Eustatius and Saba are located in the Lesser Antilles south of Sint Maarten. The region uses the US dollar as its official currency and Dutch as its official language, with English and Papiamentu recognised regionally depending on the island. Administration is handled through individual island governments, each led by a Lieutenant Governor, while Dutch citizens in these islands participate in Dutch and European elections.
