Arafura Marine Park

The Arafura Marine Park lies in the tropical waters of the Northern Territory, roughly 250 kilometres north-east of Darwin and well offshore in the Arafura-Timor Sea region. It is Australia's most northern Commonwealth marine park and forms part of the broader North Network of Australian Marine Parks. Covering more than 22,000 square kilometres, the reserve stretches from shallow shelf areas and raised coral shoals down to seafloor canyons deeper than 500 metres. The park is managed for both conservation and sustainable use, and is recognized as an IUCN Category VI protected area. It is organized into multiple use, special purpose, and special purpose (trawl) zones, allowing carefully regulated commercial and recreational activity alongside habitat protection. The varied seafloor geology, including the Money Shoal plateau, gives the park a striking mix of environments that support corals, reef sharks, snappers, turtles, and other marine life typical of northern Australia.
