Germany's first national park and Central Europe's largest contiguous forest wilderness

Bavarian Forest National Park

Bavarian Forest National Park is Germany's oldest national park, established on October 7, 1970 in the eastern Bavarian Forest along the Czech border. Spanning approximately 24,250 hectares of mountainous terrain, it forms the largest contiguous forest area in Central Europe together with the neighboring Czech Šumava National Park. The park protects a diverse landscape of Norway spruce-dominated highland forests, mixed mountain forests of European silver fir, common beech and spruce, and ecologically valuable raised bogs with bog lakes such as Latschensee. The highest peaks within the park are Großer Rachel at 1,453 meters, Lusen at 1,373 meters, and Großer Falkenstein at 1,305 meters. The park is renowned for its commitment to non-intervention conservation philosophy, allowing natural processes like bark beetle epidemics to run their course in the core nature zone, creating a living laboratory for forest ecosystem dynamics.
