Blumberger Pforte und Mittlere Wutach

Blumberger Pforte und Mittlere Wutach is a designated European Flora-Fauna-Habitat (FFH) area in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, situated between the towns of Donaueschingen and Waldshut-Tiengen. Covering roughly 6,325 hectares across two administrative districts, the Schwarzwald-Baar-Kreis and the Landkreis Waldshut, the site extends across parts of three major natural regions: the Swabian Alb, the Black Forest, and the transition zone between them. The defining geographic feature is the middle reach of the Wutach River where it cuts a deeply incised gorge, the Wutachschlucht, downstream from the so-called Wutachknie. Crisp limestone cliffs, scree slopes, cave systems, and old-growth gorge forests dominate the valley bottom, while the uplands above carry dry limestone grasslands, juniper heaths, meadow orchards, and orchids-rich beech forests. The combination of canyon and plateau in a single protected unit gives the area an unusually varied habitat mosaic within a compact footprint. Designated by the Regierungspräsidium Freiburg in 2019 after a 2004 application under the EU Habitats Directive, the area lies entirely within the Naturpark Südschwarzwald and connects ecologically to the broader Wutach and Baaralb bird protection zone, as well as several overlapping nature reserves. Its protected status reflects the ecological importance of preserving one of the most dramatic river gorges in Central Europe together with the rare dry-grassland and forest communities found on its surrounding plateaus.
