Cueva del Guácharo National Park

Cueva del Guácharo National Park is a protected area in northeastern Venezuela spanning approximately 627 square kilometers of mountainous terrain in Monagas state. The park is centered around Guácharo Cave, an extensive limestone cavern system stretching over 10 kilometers and containing numerous large chambers and impressive rock formations. This cave system holds the distinction of being the longest cave in Venezuela, with internal conditions remarkably stable at around 19 degrees Celsius and near-saturation humidity. The park derives its name from the guácharo, also known as the oilbird, a fruit-eating nocturnal bird that roosts in vast numbers within the cave's entrance chambers. The surrounding landscape consists of cloud forest covered mountains within the Cordillera de Caripe range, creating a misty ecological corridor that supports exceptional biodiversity. Established as a national park in 1975, this area holds significant ecological, historical, and cultural importance for Venezuela.
