Deryneia Bird Sanctuary

Deryneia is a small Special Protection Area on the eastern coast of Cyprus, designated for the conservation of wild birds under the European Birds Directive. It lies within the UN buffer zone east of the village of Deryneia and north of Paralimni, occupying only about 5.7 hectares of steep coastal terrain. The reserve consists of a narrow stretch of coastline dominated by phrygana, a low, shrubby Mediterranean vegetation typical of dry, sun-exposed slopes. Because the area sits inside the demilitarized buffer zone, human disturbance has been historically very low, allowing birds to use the shoreline as a quiet stopover point. The site is Cyprus's smallest Special Protection Area and was formally reported as a bird protection site in 2021. It plays a meaningful role along the eastern Mediterranean flyway, providing a rest habitat for migratory waders, plovers, and songbirds that pass through the region between Africa and Europe.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
