Ehemalige Tongrube von Mainhausen

The Ehemalige Tongrube von Mainhausen is a small nature reserve in the municipality of Mainhausen, in the eastern part of the Offenbach district of Hesse, Germany. It protects a roughly 15 hectare lake landscape that developed in a former clay pit, together with adjacent stretches of the Main river shoreline. The site carries a dual designation: it is both a German nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) and, on the same area, a Natura 2000 Bird Protection Area (Vogelschutzgebiet). The reserve is recognized as a regionally and supra-regionally important refuge for water-associated and threatened bird species, especially as a resting, wintering, and breeding area. It also provides habitat for threatened amphibians and insects, as well as near-natural floodplain vegetation along the Main. Its elevated conservation status is closely linked to the arrival of the black-necked grebe as a breeding species, an event that triggered the formal protection of the area. Although compact in size, the Tongrube von Mainhausen stands out within Hesse as a key site for wetland and aquatic biodiversity in an otherwise heavily modified lower Main valley landscape. Its combination of open water, shoreline transition zones, and floodplain vegetation makes it a notable example of how industrial extraction sites can be transformed into ecologically valuable protected habitat.
