El Angolo Game Reserve

El Angolo Game Reserve is a large protected area in northern Peru, set within the seasonally dry tropical forests of the Tumbes-Piura region. Its landscape ranges from lowland dry forest to mid-elevation hillsides, supporting a unique mix of plant and animal species adapted to one of the most threatened ecosystems in the country. Unlike many reserves that are off-limits to hunting, El Angolo is managed as a hunting reserve under Peruvian law. The white-tailed deer is the only species legally hunted here, and trophy hunting is carefully regulated by the local hunting club in coordination with the national park authority. This combination of controlled use and conservation distinguishes El Angolo from purely extractive reserves elsewhere in Peru. Ecologically, El Angolo forms part of a regional conservation corridor that includes Cerros de Amotape National Park and Tumbes National Reserve. Together, these three areas make up the Noroeste Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO since 1977, linking fragmented dry forest habitats across the northwestern coast and Andes foothills of Peru.
