Elbinseln Pillnitz und Gauernitz

Elbinseln Pillnitz und Gauernitz is a small nature reserve in Saxony, Germany, that protects the two last remaining river islands of the Upper Elbe within the state. Located near the villages of Pillnitz and Gauernitz along the Elbe Valley between Dresden and Meißen (Meissen), the reserve safeguards a landscape that has largely vanished from this stretch of river due to nineteenth century channelization and flood control works. The protected area centers on the Pillnitzer Elbinsel and the Gauernitzer Elbinsel, which together cover about 23.5 hectares of floodplain soils, riparian woodland, and soft riverbanks. Because intact Elbe islands are now extremely rare in Saxony, the site has high conservation value for habitat preservation, species protection, and ecological connectivity along one of Central Europe's major rivers. The reserve is formally an IUCN Category IV habitat and species management area and forms part of broader European protected-area networks, including a designated Fauna-Flora-Habitat site and a Bird Directive (Birds Directive) Special Protection Area covering the Elbe Valley. It is therefore a small but ecologically important node within a much larger system of Elbe floodplain conservation.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
