Felsberg bei Reichenbach

Felsberg bei Reichenbach is a small protected landscape in the Odenwald hills of southern Hesse, Germany. It sits on the southeastern slope of the Felsberg, a 514-meter peak within the Lautertal valley, in the Bergstraße district north of the village of Reichenbach. The reserve is best known for the Felsenmeer Lautertal, a striking sea of granite boulders that tumbles down the mountainside and forms one of the most distinctive geological features of the entire Odenwald range. Established as a nature reserve in 1972 and additionally designated as a European Natura 2000 site under the Habitats Directive, the area combines geological heritage with extensive forest habitat. Its roughly 168 hectares of woodland cover the slopes leading up to the Felsberg summit, creating a continuous transition from valley settlements to upland forest on the edge of the UNESCO-listed Messel Pit fossil site region. The reserve represents a rare combination of monumental granite weathering, woodland biodiversity, and European conservation importance. It functions as a protected refuge for native forest species while preserving a culturally and geomorphologically significant landscape that has shaped local identity for centuries.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
