Garden Mountain Wilderness

Garden Mountain Wilderness is a small federally designated wilderness area in western Virginia, located next to Burke's Garden in Bland County. It forms part of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and lies within the Ridge and Valley Section of the central Appalachians, with elevations rising from roughly 2,500 feet along Lick Creek to about 4,080 feet along the crest of Garden Mountain. The area protects a mix of valley hardwood forests and dry ridgetop communities, including a notable stand of old-growth trees and a rare pure stand of table mountain pine, a species that depends on fire to reproduce. It borders the Beartown Wilderness, the Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness, and a portion of the Appalachian Trail, making it a small but ecologically distinctive part of a larger Appalachian wilderness landscape. Garden Mountain was designated as wilderness in 2009 through the Omnibus Public Land Management Act and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service through the Eastern Divide Ranger District. Despite its small size, the wilderness supports unusual plant communities, old-growth forest, and protected habitat for sensitive species such as the Tennessee dace.
