This protected landscape covers roughly 299 hectares of sloping terrain along the northern side of the middle Neckar valley, between the towns of Mundelsheim and Gemmrigheim in the district of Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg. It belongs to the natural region of the Neckar Basin and protects a varied cultural landscape in which historical terraced vineyards, dry rocky habitats, orchards, and ecologically linked hillside habitats come together in a compact, connected area. The defining character of the area lies in the close combination of long-established viticulture and natural hillside features such as rock formations named in the protected-area title, including the Felsengärten, Käsberg, Wurmberg, Gündelstein, and Kelterschen. The site is managed as a Protected Landscape (Landschaftsschutzgebiet) under IUCN Category V, with a focus on preserving both the visual and ecological qualities of the valley. Beyond its landscape and conservation role, the protected area also functions as a coherent near-natural recreation space for the surrounding communities. It preserves not only the traditional wine-growing land use with its stone walls and terraced steps, but also the orchard stands, habitat networks, and scenic integrity that define the Neckar valley experience in this stretch between Mundelsheim, Hessigheim, Besigheim, and Gemmrigheim.
