Historical Catalogue of Recorded Earthquakes Associated with the Haardtrand Nature Reserve

This collection provides a chronological account of earthquake events recorded within the proximity of the Haardtrand bird protection area. Each entry maps an epicentre to its calculated distance from the protected mosaic of vineyard terraces, woodland slopes, and open lowlands. The data serves as a transparent resource for understanding past regional seismic activity and its geographic relation to these specific conservation landscapes.

Haardtrand

The Haardtrand is a designated European bird protection area in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and a key component of the Natura 2000 ecological network. Stretching across roughly 14,700 hectares, it is not a single continuous tract of land but a patchwork of parcels that together span three distinct landscape zones: the forested slopes of the Palatinate Forest, the eastern Haardt edge that gives the site its name, and the open lowlands toward the Rhine. This mosaic of woodland, vineyard terraces, sandy open ground, orchards, and small wet meadows creates the structural diversity required by a wide community of bird species. Many of the targeted birds depend on traditional cultivated landscapes, including old orchards and dry grassland, alongside mature broadleaf and pine forests with plenty of deadwood and open canopy structure. As part of the EU Birds Directive network, the area is managed with the goal of keeping its characteristic bird populations in favorable conservation status, balancing the needs of forest specialists with those of species tied to open cultural landscapes and warm dry slopes.

Haardtrand’s earthquake catalogue is followed by links to additional protected places, allowing discovery to continue beyond its Palatinate vineyard slopes, orchard meadows, dry grassland, forest, and bird habitats. The list is not a classification of similar sites: shared Natura 2000 status, landscape, location, geology, earthquake evidence, seismic significance, current hazard, risk, and data depth are not implied.
