Holter Wald

The Holter Wald is a protected forest landscape in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany, situated on the eastern margin of the Westfälische Bucht. Covering more than 600 hectares inside the municipal area of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock in the district of Gütersloh, it forms one of the larger contiguous woodland blocks in an otherwise sparsely forested part of the region. The reserve preserves typical Senne vegetation on sandy soils, dominated by a mix of pine, oak, and beech with alder and ash along the brooks that cross the forest from east to west. About half of the protected area is also designated as a European Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) site, giving the Holter Wald additional significance as a stepping-stone habitat for rare forest and stream species. Beyond its ecological role, the Holter Wald functions as an important near-natural recreation area for surrounding communities. Cultural landmarks such as Jagdschloss Holte, the so-called thousand-year-old oak, historic mill sites, and educational trails give the landscape an additional layer of regional identity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
