Königsberg

The Königsberg is a forested mountain reaching 568 meters in the Nordpfälzer Bergland, a low mountain range in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It lies in the Verbandsgemeinde Lauterecken-Wolfstein within the Landkreis Kusel and forms part of the broader hill country north of the Palatinate Forest. The mountain is part of a larger massif that stretches roughly five kilometers from north to south and four kilometers east to west, and it rises above the valleys of the Lauter and Talbach streams. Together with the neighboring Selberg, the Leienberg, and the Hahnenkopf, it defines one of the highest stretches of terrain in the Kusel district. Although not a designated national park in the strict sense, a substantial portion of the Königsberg is recognized as an EU Habitats Directive (FFH) area, giving it formal conservation status. The Königsberg is notable for its mix of mixed beech and oak forest, a striking rhyolite scree slope on the Leienberg, and a long history of small-scale mining for barite, mercury ore, iron ore, limestone, and coal. Medieval castles, abandoned mining settlements, and an array of hiking routes give the range both cultural and recreational significance.
