Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue

Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue is the largest nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the German state of Hesse, situated in the Hessian Ried between the River Rhine and the Bergstraße ridge, within the Landkreis Groß-Gerau. It is also one of the larger Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) areas in Hesse and functions as the largest continuous flood retention area along the Hessian stretch of the Rhine, combining ecological protection with flood defense. The reserve protects a classic Rhine floodplain landscape, organized around the inland island of Kühkopf and the adjoining peninsula-like Knoblochsaue. Its present form dates from the major Rhine straightening work of 1828 to 1829, when a direct channel was cut through the great Rhin loop, isolating the Kühkopf as an island surrounded by the new main channel and the old, now dead, arm known as the Stockstadt-Erfelder Altrhein. Formerly outlying river islands have since silted up and merged with the main area, giving the reserve its broad, winding shape. Ecologically, the area combines softwood floodplain forest with hardwood floodplain forest and a centuries-old orchard tradition that still defines parts of the landscape. Designated under nature protection since 1952 and carrying the Europareservat title, the reserve gained additional European Union recognition when it was designated as an FFH site in 2008, cementing its status as one of the most important floodplain ecosystems along the Upper Rhine.
