A forested Carpathian park bridging the wildlife of the Western and Eastern Carpathians.
Magura National Park
Magura National Park is one of Poland's 23 national parks and lies in the heart of the Beskid Niski range, in the southeastern part of the country. Established in 1995, the park covers around 194 square kilometers across the border area between the Małopolskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships, with its headquarters in the village of Krempna. The park's defining ecological role is its position as a transitional zone between the Western Carpathians and the Eastern Carpathians, making it a key refuge for species characteristic of both regions. More than 90 percent of its area is forested, with beech-dominated woodlands on the higher slopes and mixed or planted stands at lower elevations. Its landscape is shaped by the upper Wisłoka river basin and the long ridge of the Magura Wątkowska range, culminating in the peak of Wątkowa. Magura National Park is particularly significant for wildlife in Poland, hosting some of the country's highest recorded densities of raptors such as the lesser spotted eagle, the common buzzard, and the Ural owl, alongside large mammals including brown bears, wolves, lynx, and moose. Beyond its ecological importance, the park preserves a quieter Carpathian landscape marked by remote villages, beech forests, peatlands, and a distinctive cultural heritage expressed in the wooden Greek Catholic churches of neighboring communities.
