About Moosbachtal

Moosbachtal

Moosbachtal is a compact nature reserve in the southern Palatinate, occupying roughly 111 hectares of the Moosbach valley and its tributary the Seibertsbach west of the town of Dahn in Landkreis Südwestpfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate. Placed under formal protection in 1984, the reserve safeguards a heterogeneous valley landscape in which a chain of historic impoundment ponds (Stauweiher) sits alongside water and bank vegetation of the streams themselves, wet meadows of varying character, patches of swamp woodland, dry sandy slopes, and stands of near-natural forest. Its ecological value lies in this very mixture: rare floating-leaf plant communities around the impoundment ponds, vulnerable riparian habitats along the Moosbach and Seibertsbach, and the threatened animal populations that depend on the full mosaic. Designated under IUCN category IV as a habitat and species management area, Moosbachtal is recognized primarily for conserving these near-natural plant and animal communities, stabilizing their successional stages, and enhancing overall biodiversity for scientific reasons and because of the rarity and fragility of the habitats involved. The reserve also has a recreational dimension, as the long-distance Fernwanderweg Pirmasens to Belfort passes through the area, linking the protected valley to a wider network of Palatinate Forest hiking routes. Despite its modest size, Moosbachtal exemplifies the characteristic southern Palatinate combination of sandstone stream valleys, historic pond chains, and ecologically rich forest and wetland mosaics.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
